This is not an actual image of Sarge, but it looks identical to him and any pictures I had of him pale in comparison to this one. Sarge lived from 1984 to 2002

I have entered "Pets are a Pleasure" in "Muffin's Top Site Competition". Please click on the button below to vote for me. Thanks.

This was a competition I was invited to join and I would so appreciate it if you would vote for "Pets are a Pleasure" to become the "Top Animal Site".

I was originally invited to compete in the "Battle of the Ancients" and did so for quite some time. It seems now though, that the site no longer exists and I imagine the competition has disappeared as well. It was a lot of fun while I was competing. Your support was so appreciated.

These "Whiskers Buddies" aren't fully grown when you get them. I got them many years ago, and unfortunately the link I had to refer you seems to be obsolete now. It's too bad, because it was fun to see how they grew over a period of 4 weeks.

The Animal Rescue Site

I have never been able to truly like someone who didn't like animals or someone who mistreated them. To me our pets are precious living beings, and even though they say animals don't have souls, I don't believe "them".

To come home to an empty house every day without any sign of life would be very dismal. When I open the door Gypsy's running from the living room to greet me and Kaissa's on her back on the kitchen floor, rolling all over and stretching and greeting me with her welcome home cat talk. Toughy and Lovey are chirping away saying "Glad you're home" and I feel that I have arrived, I am home where I know I am loved. And, for anyone who has pets, you know that that love is so unconditional. It doesn't depend on how you look, what you say or what kind of mood you are in. They love you, no matter what.

Throughout my lifetime, I have loved and lost many of my precious pets. They live such short lives and unless you get yourself a parrot, you can be pretty sure you will outlive them. That is the heartbreaking thing about loving them. And it was because of my recent loss of Sarge that I decided to create this site. He was such a sweet, gentle soul with such a beautiful personality and he lost his 2 month battle with liver cancer in October, 2002. He left such a void in my life that will never be filled and it was because of him that I found out about the Rainbow Bridge, where I know he is waiting for me along with all my other lost loves. I take solace in that.

So, Sarge, it is to you that this site is dedicated. And, it is in your honor that I hope to share with all the world the fact that "Pets are a Pleasure".

Update, August, 2008

My goodness, how time passes by so quickly. I can’t believe that I originally started up this site in 2002 and it is now 6 years later. Poor old Gypsy has now joined Sarge and my other fur babies at Rainbow Bridge. She lived to the ripe old age of 20 years old and in the end, she was mostly blind, had only one fang left, had hyperthyroidism for which she received daily medication. Her kidneys were starting to fail her and in the last two years of her life, I had to hydrate her twice daily. The end was when her stomach started to bloat and after aspirating over a litre of blood tinged liquid, the vet suggested that if I wanted I could have some diagnostic tests done on her to see what was causing it. He felt it was probably pancreatic cancer. I made the heartbreaking decision to let her go and not submit her to the discomfort of having the tests done. She maintained her dignity and pride until the last moment. I always considered her to be such a “lady”. It was a heartbreaking decision to make, but I never doubted that it was the right decision. And so, I was able to cradle her in my arms and comfort her and love her until her last breath. If you have ever seen “Cats” and remember the cat who sang “Memories”, it is this cat which so reminds me of Gypsy.

Kaissa is now 13 years old and is an insulin dependent diabetic, but she is such a trooper. I guess the shots I have to give her twice a day must really make her feel good, because not once has she ever fought the injections. As a matter of fact, if, for some reason, I am not on time to give her the insulin, she lets me know that I am late. She plops down in front of me, starts rolling on her back and meows, as if to tell me to “get with the program”.

When Gypsy died, I thought I should get Kaissa another companion, and so I adopted “Luce”. Luce is a very, very big “tuxedo” cat and when he came to me he was originally named “Tommy”. He was three when I got him and from his behaviour and size, I always looked on him as a dog in cat’s clothing. And what a terror he was! Having lived with other cats and a big dog, he decided he was going to rule the roost. From the day he walked in, he totally terrorized Kaissa who was unfortunately totally declawed by her previous owners. He would stalk her and then pounce, and play was not his intention. He attacked and because she could not defend herself, he made her life hell and my life very stressful. And thus came his “renaming”. He went from being “Tommy” to “Lucifer, the cat from hell, who is really a dog in cat’s clothing”. I tried all sorts of techniques to get them to make peace with each other, but nothing worked. Finally, after many months of trying, I gave up and realized there were going to have to be major changes made in my home so that they could both live in the same house. And so I kept them separated with Kaissa having the run of the house one day and Luce in my computer room where he would spend lots of time with me while I was on the computer. The next day, Luce had the run of the house and Kaissa was with me while I was on the computer.

A couple of months passed and I realized that with his young age and tremendous amount of energy, Luce really did need to have a friend. A neighbor of mine, who took care of all the strays in the neighborhood, told me about a women who owned 4 dogs and 6 cats. She had to get rid of the cats because one of her children had become allergic. If I was interested, I could have first pick. And so, PJ joined our happy household. I took him on provision that if he and Luce did not get along, I was not going to keep him. I have never given up on an animal before, but I just could not imagine living in a house with three cats that I had to keep separated. And so, determined that I would not get attached to this beautiful tabby who had eyes that looked as if he was wearing eyeliner, I brought him home. Well, PJ, who had been born to a female stray cat and had lived with all these other animals, decided that he was going to be the ruler of the house. Luce tried to intimidate him and PJ would just look at him as if to say “dream on, Buster”. He was not afraid to stand up to the big bully and within days they were the best of friends, chasing each other up and down my long hallway and playfighting. There was never any hissing or real fighting. Luce, thankfully had met his match.

It is now 4 years later and Luce and PJ are the best of friends and play, joust, and groom each other. Kaissa remains my little solitary lady who is totally content just to be with me. I still have to do the “changing of the guard” so that all cats get to have their share of the freedom of being in the main part of the house, but,all in all, it has worked out best for everyone. They all seem very content no matter where they are and I get to share the love of three wonderful, very loving kitties. What could have turned out to be a very sad story ended up having a very happy conclusion for everyone and I am happy that I remained determined to keep them all.
